This is the origin story of Bill Jones, a Space Corps officer who learns that his wife, Tabitha, has been involved in a long-running, on-again, off-again affair with Bull Travers, the Executive Officer of the new spacecraft USS Armstrong.

The situation climaxes when the Armstrong is docked over the planet Mars. Bill is forced to deal with Bull, and the encounter affects him for the rest of his career.
